Republican lawmaker backs Sherman for NH Senate
Oct. 25 — To the Editor:
Tom Sherman is a good man. He is a hard working individual and his record in Concord is proof of that. As a physician Tom has been trained in many skills that continue to serve him well as he represents his constituents. Tom approaches legislation in a thoughtful and well-informed manner thus avoiding some of the unintended consequences we frequently see. He is an excellent active listener which is imperative when trying to understand all sides of an issue. Tom regularly demonstrates his ability to weigh the benefits versus the risks allowing him to consider the complexity of proposed legislation in an insightful manner. During our last session there was proposed legislation to deal with the opioid crisis. We had no shortage of opinions and Tom listened to hours of testimony and input from vested groups and helped put together a piece of legislation that allows both the medical community and the state to take serious steps defusing the crisis.
Tom is a man of principle. He represents a large number of constituents which is challenging since there are sure to be disagreements. While it is easy to go along with what’s popular, Tom has always taken the high road when doing that popular thing conflicts with what is right or best for his constituents. Physicians are charged with making critical decisions all the time and are familiar with making decisions with partial information and adjusting a plan as new information is gleaned. We need politicians capable of assessing and reassessing situations in order to make the best decision. Politicians must be open to the idea that new information may present itself and therefore a course of action may change. In some circles this is considered a flaw, but in the rapidly changing environment in which we find ourselves we need someone who can adjust to new information and think on his feet – Tom does this very well.
Tom would be a great addition to the Senate. Physicians are hardworking compassionate folks and Tom would bring these and many other qualities to the Senate. Some of the most critical issues facing the state at this time are health care related and the senate needs Tom’s special expertise. Tom has extensive knowledge pertaining to health care which his fellow senators’ could draw upon. Much of the legislation the Senate deals with involves health care either directly or indirectly, with Tom in the Senate, with his clear picture of how health care could be involved in legislation, the Senate will minimize unintended consequences.
I support Tom’s candidacy for Senate. New Hampshire needs leaders like Tom. I hope you will join me in getting our State on the right track.
